Campogiovanni - Il Quercione Riserva - 2 Pack Wood Box
2 Pack Wood Box Including 2011 and 2013 Campogiovanni Il Quercione Vintage
Overview: Back in the 1980s, before Brunello had achieved the wide international acclaim it enjoys today, Agricola San Felice bought the Campogiovanni estate, on the south-western side of Montalcino. Fourteen of the estate’s 23 hectares of vineyards are currently used for the production of Brunello. Brunello Campogiovanni is one of the estate’s flagship products, and now enjoys full recognition as one of this territory’s great wines, having won a string of major national and international awards.
Produced only in the most exceptional growing years, this Reserva is considered by San Felice to be the finest expression of its Campogiovanni terroir . Carefully selected clusters of Sangiovese grosso from its 2.5-hectare Il Quercione Vineyard, yeld a wine that effortlessly marries together depth, elegance and authenticity of style, plus a remarkable capacity for lenghty ageing. It matures 24 months in 500-litre French oak tonneaux and a further 36 in the bottle.
Tasting Notes:
2011 Vintage: Big and powerfully structured, this opens with aromas evoking truffle, sunbaked earth, fruitcake, iris and a whiff of game. The round meaty palate shows raspberry compote, fleshy morello cherry, clove and a hint of nutmeg alongside chewy tannins. You'll also notice the warmth of alcohol on the finish.
2013 Vintage: Aromas of underbrush, French oak, tobacco and stewed prune lead the nose. The brawny, assertive palate offers mature black cherry, vanilla and licorice alongside the heat of scorching alcohol and grainy tannins that leave a lean astringent finish. It closes on a note of roasted coffee bean.
Pairing: The perfect accompaniment for mixed grills, game, mushroom- and truffle-based dishes, and mature cheeses.
Points: 93, Robert Parker (2011); 92, Vinous (2013)
Format/ABV: 750 ml/15.5% (2011); 15.0% (2013)
