Scaia - Corvina - Veneto IGT
Overview: The name scaia is a local colloquialism that refers to crumbs of parmesan cheese, which the chalky soil in the area resembles. With a focus on quality over quantity and maintaining a balance between tradition and experimentation, the Scaia project incorporates regionally significant varietals such as Corvina, Rondinella and Garganega, as well as international varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, into the wines. Producing single varietal wines from some of the traditional blending grapes of Valpolicella, such as Corvina and Rondinella, gives interesting expressions of these varietals that aren’t often tasted on their own.
The Scaia project was launched by Tenuta Sant’Antonio in 2006 with the aim of creating wines with a modern style outside the restrictions of the denomination system. This wine could be labeled as a Valpolicella DOC except that it uses 100% Corvina without the addition of Rondinella as is required for a Valpolicella. The Scaia wines are very fruity and fresh, for young consumers or for those who want something different.
Tasting Notes: This 100% Corvina highlights the beauty and depth of this grape. The wine opens with a balanced mix of dried herbs, savory spices and wild red fruits. The wine is medium in body with tart cherry, by leaf and tobacco flavors darting in and out on the palate. The wine finishes with a vibrant and refreshing level of acidity, giving it lift at the end of each glass.
Pairing: Beef and venison
Points: 91, Wine Enthusiast
Format/ABV: 750 ml/13.0%
